1. Self guided snorknel trail

As a massive snorkelling fan, I jumped at the chance to do a self guided trail. By donating $5 you can purchase a waterproof card from the newsagent in Arcadia and other locations on the island which contains information on where to go and what to see. There are two routes to choose from, we did Geoffrey Bay as it was closer. Hire snorkel equipment from your hostel and get the chance to see giant clams, a propeller and even a shipwreck! The water was pretty murky when we went so avoid going near a full moon as the visibility tends to be worse.

2. Rock wallabies

We happened across these little fellows by chance. You can find them right next to Geoffrey Bay. Watch out as they are very quiet and suddenly appear, one really made me jump! Do your research of what you can feed them if you are wanting to, but the locals prefer if tourists don’t.

3. West Point

This location is only accessible by hiring a 4×4 car and its the best place on the island to watch the sunset. We shopped around and hired one for $120 for 24 hours. There’s some beaches that can only be reached by boat or 4×4 vehicles and makes a great day out for exploring.

4. Horseshoe Bay

Restaurants, cafes, ice cream shops and most importantly a great bay for swimming! Stinger nets are up during the season and with lifeguards so its a great place to chill out and catch some sunshine.

5. Horseback riding

Fancy a 2 hour horse ride through beautiful bushland, ride on a sandy beach and then ride a horse bareback in the sea?! Well thats what you can do on Magnetic Island! Don’t worry if you have never ridden before, they have friendly horses to suit all abilities. For $120 it is pricey but so unique that it ticked another thing off my bucket list. Remember to wear long trousers and enclosed footwear. Helmets and bum bags are provided to hold your valuables, like a water bottle and camera.

6. The Forts walk

IMG_1263_crop_1200x617

If you are looking for an interesting one hour walk to learn more about how Magnetic Island became a key military base for defense then the Forts walk is for you. See amazing views over Arthur Bay, spot wild koalas chilling in the trees and see a 360 gun barrack.

Get up early to enjoy a wildlife experience like no other. All you can eat breakfast, from a fried breakfast, pancakes to healthy alternatives.

IMG_1145_crop_1200x617

You get to hold bearded dragons, lizards, parrots, pythons to the main highlight of holding a koala!

8. Hire a car

IMG_1126_crop_1200x617

The bus service that runs every hour on the island is reliable but doesn’t go everywhere on the island due to the road conditions. Hire a car for the day and go exploring. We had great fun in an open top 4×4, so set your own pace and go off-road!

9. Arthur Bay and Florence Bay

Only accessed by boat or 4×4 these great snorkeling spots even include a piano on the beach!

We saw cabbage coral, blue spotted stingrays and a wide variety of tropical fish.

10. Man Friday Restaurant

Check out this Mexican restaurant in Nelly Bay which offers large portions and a chance to spot the resident possum who we met!

Cheers!
